I like the old "Stitch by Stitch" series, sometimes available at used book stores. Has sewing, knitting, crochet, and other homey things, with full instructions -- in "lesson" format, the book was a series by subscription, so the first numbers are much easier to find than the last few (20 in all).

have you looked at the community colleges? even the actual classes, that meet one evening a week, generally let anyone participate, even if they are not seeking a(nother) degree

I would reccomend "Make It Sew." 10206 Watson Road in Sunset Hills, Mo. 63127. I took a great class when Eunice Farmer Fabrics was still around. Their website isn't very up-to-date but it's probably worth a try.
